HAVE SOME OLD-FASHIONED FUN AT THE TEXAS STATE FAIR.

In the 1890s, Texans went to the state fair to see the latest farm implements and catch lectures by temperance crusaders. How things have changed. Cattle fans can still check out prize livestock, but the less agriculturally-inclined can take in daily Broadway musicals, receive free makeup consultations and ride the $5 million Texas SkyWay. Sample local delicacies like fried Coke with a corn dog—both invented at the Texas State Fair—and get your picture taken with Big Tex, the fair’s 52-foot-tall cowboy mascot. Everything’s bigger in Texas, after all. The fair runs until October 21. www.bigtex.com
